Create and edit items

Add an item with a price, VAT, image and allergens, and decide if it is published and sellable.

An item is one thing you sell. You create it with a name and a price, then fill in the rest on the item page.

Create an item

Open Items

Go to Products, then Items.

Click New Item

Click New Item. A form opens.

Fill in the basics

Enter the product name. It must be between 5 and 100 characters. Enter the Price. Leave Is bundle off unless you are building a bundle.

Click Create

Click Create. The item opens so you can finish setting it up.

A new item is Published and Is sellable? is on. Check its category and VAT category before you save.

Find an item

The list shows each item with its categories, price and status. Use the search box to find an item by name. Use the category filter to narrow the list. Switch on Show non sellable to also see items that are only used as choices in variations.

Click an item to open it. Click Save when you are done. Use the language buttons at the top to enter the name and description in each language. The name is required in English.

The item page

Name and switches

  • Published shows the item to customers. You need publish permission to change it.
  • Is sellable? decides if the item can be sold on its own. Turn it off for items that only appear as a choice in a variation. When it is off, the price, VAT, category, variation and image sections are hidden.
  • Age restricted marks the item as age restricted.

The small alias next to the name is an internal name that helps you find the item in Dineout Partner. Customers do not see it.

Price, cost and VAT

  • Price is what the customer pays.
  • Cost is what the item costs you. Dineout shows the Margin between the two as an amount and a percentage.
  • VAT Category is required for a sellable item. If it is empty you cannot save. Set up categories in VAT categories.

Barcodes

Scan or type a barcode and press Enter in Barcodes. An item can have several barcodes.

Block discounts

Switch on Block discounts to stop promo codes and product list discounts from applying to this item.

Description, categories and variations

  • Add a Description and a longer Description detailed.
  • Under Categories, add the categories the item belongs to. See Categories and sections.
  • Under Variations, attach the choices and add-ons for this item. See Variations.

Constraints

Minimum items and Maximum items set the minimum and maximum the customer can select.

Printers

Choose a Select destination for where the item prints, for example Kitchen (main) or Bar (main). Choose Same as parent for items that are only choices inside another item. Dineout warns you when the choice looks wrong for the item.

Use Printer section if you want the item on a separate ticket: Starter #1 to Dessert #3.

Some companies also see a switch to print each sold item on its own ticket in the POS.

Allergens

Tap the allergens that apply: Gluten, Crustaceans, Eggs, Fish, Peanuts, Soya, Dairy, Nuts, Celery, Mustard, Sesam, SulfurDioxide, Lupine, Shellfish or Unknown.
