Open the cash drawer and handle cash

Open the cash drawer from the POS app, set the starting balance for the day, and give change on cash payments.

The cash drawer connects to your receipt printer. The POS app opens it for you when a guest pays in cash, and you can open it by hand.

The buttons for the cash drawer are greyed out when no cash drawer is connected to the printer.

Open the drawer by hand

You can open the drawer from several places:

  • On the Dashboard, open the round menu button at the bottom right and tap Open cash drawer. It says Opening... while it works.
  • In an order, tap the three-dot menu (More actions) and tap Open cash drawer.
  • In checkout, open More actions and tap Open cash drawer.

Every time the drawer opens, the app records it with the staff member who opened it. You can see these in the audit log in Dineout Partner under Cash drawer opened. See POS settings.

Set the starting balance

The first time you open an order on a new day with a cash drawer connected, the app shows Register starting balance before you can work. It asks once per drawer, until the next Z report.

Do one of these:

  • Type the amount in Balance and tap Set balance.
  • Tap the button that sets the balance to zero (the label shows zero in your currency, for example Set 0).

The starting balance is stored in the day's activity and printed on the X and Z reports. See End of day: Z-settlement.

Take a cash payment

Choose Cash in checkout

In checkout, enter the amount for the Cash row and tap Pay.

The drawer opens

The app opens the drawer for you. If it can't, a message says Cash drawer not connected.

Give change

If the guest gave more than the amount due, the row shows Return with the change. A Return cash window says how much to give back. Tap Confirm when done.

Refunds and returns paid in cash also open the drawer.
