How products are organised
Understand product lists, categories, items, variations and sections, and how they fit together.
Everything you sell in Dineout is set up under Products. This page explains the building blocks so you know where to change what.
The building blocks
| Block | What it is | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Items | One thing you sell, like a burger or a coffee. It has a price, VAT and an image. | Products → Items |
| Categories | A group of items, like "Burgers" or "Drinks". | Products → Categories |
| Product lists | A menu that holds categories. It decides where and when the products can be bought. | Products → Product lists |
| Variations | Choices and add-ons for an item, like size or extra cheese. | Products → Variations |
| Variation wizards | A step-by-step way to show an item's variations. | Products → Variation wizards |
| Sections | A label you can put on product lists, for example "Terrace" or "Bar". | Products → Sections |
| Taxes | The VAT categories your items use. | Products → Taxes |
How they fit together
Items go into categories
Each sellable item belongs to one or more categories. You pick the categories on the item.
Categories go into product lists
A product list contains one or more categories. A product list must have at least one category before you can save it.
The product list decides where it is sold
On the product list you choose Visibility, for example Point of sale, Customer online or Kiosk. You can also set when it is available, discounts and checkout options.
Variations hang on items
You attach variations to an item. The customer or cashier picks from them when ordering. A variation holds other items, like "Oat milk" or "Extra cheese", each with its own price.
Some items are not sold on their own
An item has a switch called Is sellable?. Switch it off for items that only exist as a choice inside a variation, like "Extra cheese". These items have no price, category or image of their own on the item page. See Create and edit items.
A bundle is an item with no price of its own. It is built from variations that hold other items. See Bundles.
Two kinds of "sections"
The word section is used twice in Dineout:
- Sections under Products are labels for product lists. See Categories and sections.
- A variation can also be split into sections to group its choices, for example "Meat" and "Vegetables". See Variations.
